General principles of diet in Yin deficiency picture

In the treatment of Yin deficiency, we recommend foods that provide concentrated nutrition suitable for maintaining or strengthening tissue integrity as well as promoting increased moisture and fluid levels. A diet aimed at Yin nutrition follows similar general principles to a diet designed to strengthen the blood - it has a higher proportion of protein, a wide variety of leafy and root vegetables and more nutritious grains such as wheat. In addition, it also includes moisturising and lubricating ingredients. The nutrients and oils concentrated in seeds and various beans contribute to body building and lubrication. Animal proteins are ideal for this purpose, but sources taken in excessive amounts or too concentrated, such as eggs, cheese or morels, can cause overheating and mucus accumulation.

As with Qi production and blood formation, the Spleen and Stomach serve to extract Yin from food. The diet therefore follows the above principles for maintaining the health of the Spleen, and the only change is the addition of some foods especially suited for this purpose.

Clinical notes

In addition to diet, it is important to supplement Yin with adequate sleep and a regular daily regimen. Start the morning with a glass of boiled warm water to which you add a teaspoon of honey to replenish fluids and support bowel function. During the day, we should remember to drink, especially between 10am and 12pm, either boiled water again or herbal tea. Before meals, it is ideal to drink vegetable or cereal broth to kick-start the stomach and warm it up to operating temperature. When tired, don't play sports, engage in either stretching exercises or relaxation techniques, and prefer walking outside. Nourish Yin mainly in autumn and winter, the best foods at this time are duck, spring onions, raw ginger, sweet potatoes.

Proportional food composition in Yin deficiency

Complex carbohydrates from cereals or vegetables and leafy greens, watery vegetables and fruits should be represented in roughly identical proportions. The remainder consists of high-value proteins (animal and legume) and nuts and seeds. Smaller amounts of high value dairy products such as organic cheese, organic cow's and goat's milk, yoghurt and butter are also beneficial, especially when dehydrated.

Recipes

Rice broth

In ancient China, it was eaten on the 1st and 15th day of the lunar month on the day of the full moon and always in the early morning on holidays. This was because it was an extra meal within the day. The Chinese normally ate twice a day. The largest meal was in the evening, and the reason for this was that the body was soothed after work and there was confidence that the meal would be well digested.

Morning rice broth is refreshing in nature, it will promote the replenishment of Yin, promote the function of the intestines and stomach and help to cleanse them.

We need:

  • 1 tablespoon of round-grain jasmine rice
  • 1 l of water
  • a pinch of salt

Procedure:

Bring the rice with the water and a pinch of salt to the boil and reduce to a simmer then cook for 2 hours. Serve in the morning on its own or supplement with different ingredients depending on your current health and season. Morning rice broth is supplemented with salted vegetables. The vegetables are pickled in salt, soaked in lukewarm water to remove the salt before use and then chopped (preferably white radish, carrots, celery, parsley and other root vegetables). If there are not enough salty vegetables, then cut the tofu into small pieces and add more Shoyu soy sauce. This is all steamed and added in place of the vegetables.
