Laricifomes officinalis (Laricifomes officinalis, Agarikon, Quinine conk) is a disease-causing woody fungus that grows in the northern hemisphere, mainly in the higher regions of Europe (e.g. Alps, Carpathians), Russia, Canada, Asia, etc. It mainly attacks larch trees and produces perennial fruiting bodies that can be more than 60 cm long. The shape resembles a spear or a column. At first they are yellow-white and soft, but as the years go by they darken (they tend to be yellow-brown) and harden. The mushroom is not poisonous, but due to its consistency and taste, which is quite bitter, it is not used in the kitchen. The English name derives from its bitter taste, as people thought it contained quinine. Vervain can be dried and crushed into powder, used in decoctions and teas, etc. It has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years, and has also been found in a 5000 year old mummy that was preserved in ice.
