Senior club Ostash
Trip through the eyes of the Senior Club Ostaš
On Thursday, May 26th, at 6 a.m., over fifty members of the Ostaš Club stood on Police Square, backpacks on their backs, and we set off on our journey to Olomouc. After a week of rainy weather, the sun finally came out, but there was fog on the way, so we were worried if we would need umbrellas? Finally the sun started to shine and the panorama of Olomouc opened up in front of us. The bus took us to the city centre.
On our way we stop at several mostly baroque fountains, Merkur's, Hercules', Arion's, Neptune's, Jupiter's.
The dominant feature of the Lower Square is the Marian Plague Column. We see some of the house signs - At the Golden Stag, At the Black Horse, At the Golden Sun, At the Green Tree, At the Silver Spade, At the Golden Pike, where Gustav Mahler lived when he worked at the Moravian Theatre. The Hauenschild Palace stands on the Lower Square, where the then eleven-year-old W.A. Mozart lived with his parents and sister during his stay.
We pass St. Michael's Church, several monasteries, the pilgrimage site of St. John Sarkander's Chapel with torture instruments on display, the Jesuit Conclave, several buildings of Palacký University, and part of the city walls.
We come to Bishop's Square to the Olomouc Archbishop's Palace - the seat of the Olomouc Archbishopric, one of the most magnificent Olomouc Baroque palace buildings. In the Throne Hall here in 1848, Franz Joseph I ascended the imperial throne. Beneš, V. Havel, V. Klaus.
We will end our tour of the historical centre of Olomouc on Wenceslas Square with a visit to the Cathedral of St. Wenceslas, where the reliquary with the relics of St. John Sarkander is located, and the coffins of the bishops of Olomouc are kept on the lower floor. The largest bell in Moravia, St. Wenceslas, weighing eight tons, is suspended in the cathedral.
At this point we said goodbye to our wonderful guide, Mrs. Jana Knápková, whom we thanked for her clear explanations and knowledge, also for adapting the pace to our "retired" physical capabilities.
After a short refreshment we sat down in the bus. Pleasantly tired and full of impressions from a wonderful day, we made our way back home.
How did we support the Ostaš Senior Club ?
We are glad that we could support the Senior Club Ostaš and pay for their bus trip to Olomouc so that they could spend an active day exploring the beauty of the Czech Republic.

Finally, we would like to thank the MycoMedica Foundation - Mr. Martin Schirl and the citizens of Police nad Metují who contributed to the fundraiser held in January 2022 at the Kolarov Theatre. Without their support, our trip and many other events would not have been possible! We would also like to thank the Peony couple and the committee members for organizing the trip.
